SMS Notifications
Definition, how it works, and why it matters for service businesses.
SMS notifications are automated text messages sent to a business owner, dispatcher, or technician summarizing phone activity — a new booking, a missed call, an urgent message, or an end-of-day recap — delivered straight to a mobile phone. They're a lightweight alternative to logging into a dashboard or checking voicemail to find out what happened while the owner was busy on a job.
How it works
When a triggering event happens on a call — an appointment gets booked, a caller flags an emergency, or a message is left — the phone system sends an outbound text through a carrier or SMS API to a configured number, usually including a short summary of the caller's name, issue, and callback number.
Why it matters for service businesses
Trades professionals are typically on a ladder, under a sink, or driving between jobs rather than sitting at a desk, so a text reading "New booking: Tuesday 2pm, water heater leak, 555-0132" lets them react in seconds without stopping work to check email or open a web portal.
Example
Callbook texts a plumber the moment an AI-handled call results in a booked appointment, including the customer's name, address, and problem description, so he can glance at his phone between jobs and know exactly what landed on his schedule.
