Call Forwarding
Definition, how it works, and why it matters for service businesses.
Call forwarding is a telephony feature that redirects an incoming call from the number a customer dialed to a different destination number entirely — a mobile phone, an answering service, or an AI receptionist line. It's the basic plumbing that makes flexible coverage possible.
How it works
The forwarding rule is set at the carrier or VoIP provider level and can apply always, only when there's no answer, or only when the line is busy, so calls quietly reroute to the configured secondary number without the caller ever knowing anything changed.
Why it matters for service businesses
A solo tradesperson or small crew is almost never sitting next to the office phone — they're under a sink, up a ladder, or driving between jobs — so forwarding the business line to a mobile number or an AI receptionist is often the only practical way to make sure calls don't just ring out. It's the mechanism that turns "we're never in the office" into "we always answer."
Example
A solo plumber sets his business number to forward to Callbook whenever a call goes unanswered, so a customer calling while he's mid-repair still reaches someone who can book them in.

- Ring GroupA feature that causes multiple phones to ring simultaneously or in sequence when a call comes in. Service businesses use ring groups to ensure calls are answered by the first available team member.
- Simultaneous RingA call feature that rings multiple phone numbers at the same time, connecting the caller to whichever line answers first. This reduces missed calls by giving multiple team members the chance to answer.
- Virtual NumberA phone number that is not tied to a specific physical phone line or location. Virtual numbers can be routed anywhere, allowing businesses to have local presence in multiple areas without physical offices.
- Business Hours RoutingA call routing feature that directs incoming calls differently based on whether the business is open or closed. During business hours, calls may go directly to staff, while after-hours calls can be routed to an answering service or voicemail.
Never miss a call again
Callbook is an AI receptionist that answers every call 24/7, books the job, and texts you the details — so terms like “call forwarding” stop costing you customers.
