Call routing is the underlying process of deciding where an incoming call should go — which person, department, or system picks it up — based on rules like time of day, the number dialed, or what the caller actually needs. It's the traffic-direction logic that sits behind almost every other phone feature.

How it works

A rules engine evaluates the incoming call against conditions such as the current time, a menu selection, or, in more advanced setups, the caller's stated intent as understood by AI, and then sends the call to the matching destination — a specific technician, a department queue, voicemail, or an automated system.

Why it matters for service businesses

A trades company that handles more than one type of job — plumbing and HVAC under the same roof, say — needs calls landing with the crew that can actually help, instead of funneling everything through a generalist who then has to manually relay or transfer.
